Stark Revelations: Law Firm Lessons from the SolarWinds Hack
Widely perceived as one of the worst cyberattacks on American soil, the December 2020 Russian hack of Texas-based SolarWinds Orion platform impacted approximately 18,000 public and private sector clients, including the Pentagon, the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Treasury, Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, and Deloitte. The months-long infiltration of Orion users’ data and IT systems pose serious ramifications for firms who counsel(ed) these organizations, various subsidiaries, or affiliated suppliers. Indeed, as numerous cybersecurity analysts attest, the greatest lesson law firms can glean from the SolarWinds incident is the growing preponderance of third-party threats to enterprise security and privacy. This interactive session offers a rigorous update on best practices and potential vulnerabilities for legal service providers today. Are firms prepared for the next wave of incursions to come?

The Future of Law Firms: Design & Opportunity in Real Estate Strategy
Even before COVID-19 thrust markets into chaos, leading law firms took a proactive stance on physical space design and office strategy. Whether through collaborative workspaces, open floor plans, or more flexible and egalitarian work arrangements, firms actively embraced cost-savings and operational efficiencies in an evolving, value-based economy. In 2021, following a year of remarkable financial performance, many firms have considered—or in some instances accelerated—plans to recalibrate brick and mortar footprints. This conversation highlights current initiatives under way across the profession. What considerations have firm leaders made in terms of workplace investment and operations? What impact has the pandemic had on acquisition or expansion strategy? What role will technology or third-party providers play in the new office economy? And to what extent has client feedback helped influence firms’ overall approach?

Driving Results through Collaboration: How Top Organizations Manage Networks in Hybrid Work
As flexible work arrangements and return-to-office strategies gather steam, business executives are adapting their leadership styles to ensure optimal communication, collaboration, and employee performance across the enterprise. One popular approach involves creating organizational contexts that enable greater performance and innovation through increasingly critical networks inside and outside the organization—the subject of Management Professor Rob Cross’s newest research at Babson College. This presentation offers an interactive look at how harnessing a networking mindset can help catalyze healthy and productive work environments where business priorities and evolving employee sentiments coalesce. What lessons can law firm leaders derive from innovative peers across industries?

Paths Unbound: Recruitment & Retention in a Hybrid Work Environment
Following a brief reprieve in the pandemic’s early days, the legal lateral market saw an impressive surge toward the end of 2020. Thanks to lucrative work in key practice areas, coupled with personal stressors and individual employee burnout, firms are finding the battle for talent fiercer than ever, with many offering special compensation or choice incentives to retain star performers. Leveraging new research from Thomson Reuters Strategic Insights, this session invites law firm leaders to discuss the ever-evolving talent landscape in the COVID-19 era. What priorities or considerations are keying employee movement? How effective have firms been at keeping employees motivated or challenged? And to what extent has the pan-industry shift toward hybrid working models impacted strategic thinking and organizational culture?
